introduction
The 50-year path woven by connecting.
Shaft’s 50 years have been an endless journey of exploration.
By connecting with works and creators, countless inspirations were born, and each one has shaped the world of Shaft as it exists today.
In this exhibition, by tracing the path of connections centered around the 50 turning points that gave birth to “Shaft-ism,” you will be able to experience the origin of its unique expression.
Behind-the-scenes stories of masterpieces, the thoughts of the creators, unpublished original drawings and setting materials.
Please feel the charm and potential of Shaft, built on 50 years of history, as it embarks on a new journey.
COMMENT
On September 1, 2025, animation production company Shaft will celebrate its 50th anniversary.
Founded as a finishing company that painted animation cels with paint, we have expanded our scope of work over the years in accordance with changes in the times, and have built a system capable of producing the entire animation production process in-house.
We believe that the studio has grown, and this has led to the acclaim of our works, as each staff member in every department strives to broaden their range of expression and improve their skills, continually taking on challenges to create new animations.
We hope that this exhibition will allow everyone to revisit the feelings they experienced when they first watched our works, while tracing the 50-year path we have walked. We also aim for them to once again feel the passion and challenges that our staff has poured into each piece, which connects to Shaft’s current animation production.

- Exhibition Contents Introduction
We present Shaft's 50-year journey divided into three distinct ages: “Shu”, “Ha”, and “Ri”. Discover how countless encounters and challenges have shaped the essence of Shaft.
【Shu - The Age of Founding -】Shaft was founded by Hiroshi Wakao, formerly of Mushi Production, as a finishing (colouring) studio. While supporting the production processes of numerous works, it accumulated experience to become capable of handling the entire animation production process in-house. The finishing techniques were honed through a commitment to creating beautiful visuals for each project, evolving into Shaft's distinctive colour sensibility. As each staff member explored their expressive methods, the studio enhanced its overall capabilities while expanding its organisational structure and network, laying the groundwork for its transition to becoming a prime contractor.
【Ha - The Age of Blossoming -】Kubota Mitsutoshi (current president) assumed the role of Production Director, marking the full-scale launch of Shaft's ventures into prime contractor projects. Through repeated collaborations with creators who shaped Shaft's distinctive style – including Nakamura Ryutaro, Shinbo Akiyuki, Takeuchi Nobuyuki, Watanabe Akio, Oishi Tatsuya, and Onuma Shin – the studio's expressive capabilities underwent a dramatic evolution. The studio's distinctive identity began to crystallise through its recognised signature techniques: rapid-paced editing and meticulously crafted layouts. Internally, the establishment of a Digital Department and a Photography Department consolidated an integrated production system. Through on-set creativity and technological innovation, the essence of Shaft truly blossomed.
【Ri-The Age of Dynamism-】Leveraging cultivated techniques and sensibilities, we advance towards the next generation. With new directors and creators, the possibilities for expression and direction continue to expand. New initiatives are also progressing in organisational structure, such as the establishment of Shizuoka Studio AOI and the expansion of the CG department, while efforts to nurture the generation that will shoulder the future are now in full swing. Centred on the studio's philosophy, works, expression techniques, the creators who underpinned its early output, and the next generation will resonate together, forging new creativity.
